Mary Cain was a daughter of Christina Naranjo and a granddaughter of SaraFina Tafoya.  She was known for her classic style of carved and polished Santa Clara pottery.  Keith Tanin is a son of Margie Tanin and a nephew of potters Tina Diaz, Linda Cain, Joy Cain, and Billy Cain.  He is a grandson of Mary Cain and a great-grandson of Christina Naranjo.  This bowl was made by Keith and then carved and polished by Mary.  It is carved with an avanyu.  It is fully polished and fired a deep black coloration.  The piece is signed, “Keith Tanin, Mary Cain”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

This carved engagement basket is from the 1980s.  It is carved with a water serpent that encircles the entire piece. It is fully polished, including the braided clay handle!  It is always amazing that the handles don’t crack or break in the polishing or firing process.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Mary Cain”.   It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
