Stella Chavarria is a daughter of noted potter Teresita Naranjo and a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo. This is a classic piece of her pottery. The jar has a tall shape with a rounded rim. The shoulder of the jar is carved with flowing clouds and mountains. Note how she uses the negative space next to the carved designs to accentuate her imagery. It is fired to a glossy black. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Stella Chavarria”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. While Stella makes very little pottery today her work continues to reflect Santa Clara pottery traditions.
