This is a classic jar by Zella Cheeda. She was also known as “Antelope Woman” as she signed her pottery with an Antelope hallmark. She was from Sichomovi village on First Mesa (between Walpi and Hano). This jar is coil-built with a round shoulder and a short neck. The jar is made from red Hopi clay. It is then painted with bee-weed (black) and the designs are outlined in white. The red clay is always a bit more difficult to work with but the results are always striking. This jar has a mountain and butterfly design. They are outlined in white. The jar was traditionally fired. The jar is signed on the bottom with her hallmark, an antelope. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
