Coriz, Arthur & Hilda – 11″ Wide Tall Jar with Birds and Flowers (1997)

This is a striking large water jar by Arthur and Hilda Coriz. Hilda would coil-build each piece, and then Arthur would paint them. The painting was done with natural clay slips (white and red) and wild spinach (black). This is a large open bowl with a turned-out rim. The bowl is painted with flowers around the outside. The interior is painted with flowers along the rim and 9 birds in the center. The designs are all paitned black with wild spinach and accented with red caly. It is an unusual shape with visually striking designs! The rim of the bowl has a “spirit line” or break in the painted design on the rim, which then extends down through the entire design. This goes back to historic Kewa pottery, when the artist would use the spirit line to release their spirit or connection from the vessel. The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Arthur and Hilda Coriz”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It was originally purchased directly from the artist.

Below the shoulder are six large flowers in a medallion style. Most of the jar is painted black with wild spinach, which is both unusual and visually striking! The rim of the jar has a “spirit line” or break in the painted design on the rim, which then extends down through the entire design. This goes back to historic Kewa pottery, when the artist would use the spirit line to release their spirit or connection from the vessel. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Arthur and Hilda Coriz”. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Arthur and Hilda Coriz were exceptional in their creation of distinctive Santo Domingo pottery. Hilda would make the clay vessels and Arthur would paint the designs. Hilda was a sister of noted potter Robert Tenorio and their daughter Ione Coriz continues to make pottery. Arthur and Hilda won numerous awards for their pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market. They were known for their large vessels and use of traditional materials and firing techniques. Their pottery is signed, "Arthur and Hilda Coriz".
