Curran, Dolores – “Butterflies in the Clouds” Bear Lidded Jar

This is a very complex jar by Dolores Curran. She continues to create intricately incised and painted pottery. Her husband, Alvin Curran, inspired her to create these red polychrome incised and painted. He was known for his incised San Juan-style pottery in the late 1990s. This jar has a wide shoulder and a short neck. The top of the jar has two different styles of etched feathers below a band of clouds. The side of the jar has an avanyu. Below are more deeply etched clouds above more stylized butterflies. Separating them are band of clouds. The two different colors of red and white clay create strong accents to her precision-cut designs. The base and neck are fully polished red. The lid has a bear that is polished red, and the base of the lid is slipped with mica. Dolores said that she stylized her bear so it looks like it is “floating”. The jar and lid were both traditionally fired. It is an extraordinary amount of time to create intricate pieces in design and use the various clay additions. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dolores Curran”.

Around the neck are six swirling birds. Around the sides are alternating cloud, mountain, and rain designs. All the various colors are from different clay slips. The jar has a lid with square finial and it is fully polished. There are red-on-red lightning designs on the top of the lid It is an extraordinary amount of time to create intricate pieces in design and use the various clay additions. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dolores Curran”.
