Curran, Dolores – “Kiva Bowl and Bird Wings” Bear Lidded Jar

4"w x 5.5"h (w/ lid)

$ 2,400.00

This is an elegant jar by Dolores Curran.  She continues to create intricately incised and painted pottery.  Her husband, Alvin Curran, inspired her to create these red polychrome incised and painted.  He was known for his incised San Juan-style pottery in the late 1990s.  This jar has a low shoulder and elongated neck. The jar has two polished “kiva bowls” on each side. They are painted red-on-red with cloud designs on one side and rain designs with white clouds on the other.  Separating them are bird wing patterns with tiny incised clouds and rain patterns.  There is an avanyu incised around the shoulder of the jar and below are deeply carved waves.  The base of the jar is fully polished. The jar has a bear lid with a carved design on the top of the lid!  Note as well the variety of colorations she has been able to achieve on this piece with the various designs. Stunning!  It is an extraordinary amount of time to create intricate pieces in design and use the various clay additions.   The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dolores Curran”.
