Tony Da was a grandson of Maria Martinez and the son of Popovi Da. While he is famous as a potter, his true love was always painting. He began painting when he was in high school and then his work became more refined when he left the Navy after acquiring the skills of a draftsman. This painting is one of his from 1971. It is painted with casein. In the center is a stylized Mimbres bowl. Surrounding it are three Mimbres fish. Typical of his paintings, there are geometric shapes. Tony combined geometric shapes with his figures. He also used mixed his own colors and painted with overlapping designs and translucent and opaque colors. The more you look at his paintings, the more there is to see! Tony would use casein throughout his career as he created a mastery of combining colors and layering. The piece is signed in the lower right “D’a ’71. It is in excellent condition and has the original frame.
