Dunlap, Carlos – 12″ Wide Jar with Plant and Cloud Designs (1970s)
$ 2,200.00
Carlos Dunlap was a son of Carmelita Dunlap and a grandson of Juanita Montoya Vigil, the youngest sister of Maria Martinez. He was a brother to Jeannie Dunlap, Cynthia Dunlap, Linda Dunlap, and Martha Appleaf Fender. This large jar has a sharp shoulder and short rim. The jar is fully polished and painted before it was fired. There are swirling cloud, water, and plant designs across the surface. Carlos would paint his design, leaving a lot of open polished space. As well, the designs accentuated the forms he created. The jar was traditionally fired black-brown coloration. It is signed, “Carlos Sunrise” in the clay on the bottom. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair with a few light surface scratches. A striking and classic piece of his pottery.

Carlos Dunlap was a son of Carmelita Dunlap. He was a brother to Jeannie Dunlap, Cynthia Dunlap, Linda Dunlap, and Martha Appleaf Fender. Carmelita was a daughter of Juanita Vigil, the youngest sister of Maria Martinez. Carlos learned to make pottery from his mother. He created very large vessels in colorations that ranged from black to polychrome and a distinctive brown. However, it was his painting which remains so spectacular as it was very open and varied in style.
