Carmelita Dunlap is one of the San Ildefonso potters best known for her large vessels.  This is a large jar with a low shoulder and sloping sides. The jar is fully polished and was painted before firing. The top half has various plant designs and the designs are not repeated as the jar is turned. The bottom half has cloud, rain, and prayer feather patterns.  It is delicate design that allows open space for the highly polished surface to show through!   The jar was fired a glassy black.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Carmelita Dunlap”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is published in Greg Schaff’s “Pueblo Indian Pottery” on p. 170.  Definitely a traditional classic of her work!
