Ebelacker, Virginia – 11″ Tall Jar with Carved Avanyu (1980s)

9"w x 11"h

$ 5,500.00

WOW!  This is an exceptional large carved jar by Virginia Ebelacker.  She was the first daughter of noted potter Margaret Tafoya.  She was known for large-sized pottery as well as her deeply carved designs.  This jar has a high, round shoulder and a short neck.  The neck and base are fully polished.  The central band is carved with an avanyu.  Note the depth and complexity of the design.  It is a strong use of the space with carved clouds and negative space mountains below.  The jar is polished to a high shine and fired a glassy black.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, ‘Virginia Ebelacker”.  An exceptional piece by this important Santa Clara potter.
