Fields, Anita – “Bird Woman” 28″ Tall Clay Figure

7.5"w x 28"h

Anita Fields is one of the great intellectual and creative forces in contemporary Native art.  In 2025 she just received the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Award and in 2021 the National Endowment for the Arts award.  This piece is made from clay and is entitled, “Bird Woman“.  The figure is a woman with birds circling her head and a textured surface.  Anita said about this piece:

“This dress is all about texture.  There are all the various stamps I made to create the small circles, flowers, twigs, and other shapes, which encompass the surface of the piece.  The result is a piece which, like material, you just want to touch.  The idea for this piece is the woman is surrounded by nature. The plants, and earth are her dress and the birds of the air circle her head like a crown.  The dress represents the female.  The dresses convey my attitudes toward the strength of women and how native peoples show remarkable resourcefulness and adaptability toward their environment. The clothing Indian women created shows great pride, dignity, and hope in a culture facing insurmountable odds.”  Anita Fields

The piece is dramatic in person and signed on the bottom, “Anita Fields”.  The last photo is one of her looking at the piece in the gallery.
