Tammy Garcia is known for her contemporary designs and use of traditional clay. This jar was made in 2004. It has a round shape with a sculpted opening. The jar is deeply carved with designs. One side has a mother holding her child. They are polished both red and tan. The figures are surrounded by traditional Santa Clara geometric patterns. Note how they are angular and circular, creating small areas for carving and polishing. All the geometric designs are polished red. Opposite the figure are two large butterflies that are polished a pinkish color. Their edges are more rounded out, giving them a very gentle appearance. For the size, it is a very complex piece with deep carving and a highly polished surface. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Tammy Garcia” and it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. Tammy has won numerous awards for her pottery for nearly the past 40 years. Her creative work in clay, glass and bronze is found in museums worldwide. It is exciting to see how her contemporary work continues to move Pueblo pottery forward with it innovations.
