Gonzales, Juanita & Wo-Peen – 8″ Tall Long Neck Jar with Carved Avanyu (1930s)

6.5"w x 8.75"h

$ 1,350.00

This large long neck is by Juanita and Wo-Peen Gonzales.  Juanita married Louis “Wo-Peen” Gonzales (1907-1990) who was a son of Juan and Philomena Gonzales.  His Tewa name, “Wo-Peen” means Medicine Mountain. She met him in a hospital after he lost his arm in a hunting accident. Louis was a gifted artist and attended the San Ildefonso School of painters in the 1920s. After he lost his right arm in an accident he taught himself to paint again with his left hand. Juanita learned to make pottery from her sister-in-law, Rose Gonzales (1909-1989) and would carve in similar cameo style.  This jar has a sharp shoulder and elongated neck.  The neck and base are fully polished.  Around the top of the shoulder, there is a carved avanyu.  Note how the rain clouds extend down from the rim!  The recessed area is also red, which indicates that this is an earlier piece, or the coloration would be cream.  The piece is highly polished and fired a glassy red.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair and some wear near the base.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Juanita Wo-Peen”.   It is great to find one of their red pieces in such wonderful condition!
