Gutierrez, Faustina – Plate with Clouds (1930s)
$ 275.00
Faustina Gutierrez was the mother of Celestino Gutierrez and the grandmother of potters Effie Garcia, Sally Tafoya, Ethel Yazza, and Eugene Gutierrez. She was creative in her distinctive style of pottery designs. This plate is fully polished on the front and back. The design is a very creative series of cloud patterns. There are clouds around the rim, a cloud in the center, and a cloud near the base of the designs. It is both a creative and intricate design. It’s most likely from the 1930s, which can be seen from the signature. The painted signature on the back in this style is more typical of work from this period. It is polished on the back and signed, “Faustina”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Pablita Chavarria and Faustina Gutierrez, ca 1935
Faustina Gutierrez (1898 - 1976) was the mother of Celestino Gutierrez and the grandmother of potters Effie Garcia, Sally Tafoya, Ethel Yazza, and Eugene Gutierrez. She was known for both her deeply carved and black-on-black pottery. Over the years we have come across some extraordinary pottery by this relatively unknown artist. The pieces have been distinctive in their forms and beautifully painted or carved with designs.
