Gutierrez, Lois – Water Jar with Quail Family and Dragonflies (1995)
$ 1,400.00
This is a classic polychrome water jar by Lois Gutierrez. She is one of the few potters who continues to create polychrome pottery at Santa Clara. Polychrome, or more than three different colors of clay slips, are all painted onto the surface of the vessel before it is fired. This is a water jar shape with a wide shoulder and an elongated neck. The jar has two quail families. There are four baby quail that are looking upward at the stylized dragonflies in the sky. Below the shoulder are quail feathers. The jar has four different colors of clay! Below the shoulder is a water design. Note the overall complexity of the design and all the various clay colors! The jar was traditionally fired. It is signed on the bottom, “Lois 1995”.
