Mavasta Honyouti is a skilled Hopi Katsina carver from Hotevilla Third Mesa. He is Ronald Honyouti’s son and Clyde Honyouti’s Grandson, both skilled Hopi Katsina carvers. He is well known for his low-relief scenes. This piece is entitled, “The Cube” and it is carved from cottonwood root. The piece has six sides carved in various levels, each with a different katsina. There is an Owl and a Crow, a Deer Dancer and Deer Tracks, a Bear Katsina, a Flower Katsina, a Mountain Lion Katsina, and a second Deer Katsina. Each section is carved and then painted. It is amazing! This is one of those pieces that you have to take time to look at all the levels of designs and imagery as the piece is turned. The piece is painted after the carving. It is signed, “M H.”.

It is also carved at various depths, creating a very light-weight piece with amazing dimensionality. The designs are all rain patterns, from clouds to rainbows and water waves. There are even black-and-white carved sections with pottery-like painted rain designs. The number of areas he has carved through on this piece are exceptional. It is painted and is a creative piece of his wood art. This is one of those pieces that you have to take time to look at all the levels of designs and imagery as the piece is turned.
