Juanico, Marie Sanchez -Water Jar with Rainbow and Parrots (1990s)
$ 1,200.00
Marie Juanico (1937-2024) learned to make pottery from her mother, Dolores Sanchez (who lived to be 103!). Marie began making pottery in 1962. She was known for her innovative use of various colors of clay slips on her pottery. Her daughter, Delores Juanico Aragon, continues to make pieces in a similar style. This is one of her classic water jars. The design has a rainbow encircling the entire piece. Above the rainbow are two large Parrots with flowers. Below is a classic bird tail design with fine-line patterns. This is one of the few I’ve seen that has so much fine-line work. The jar is fully designed with a pattern that follows the shape of the water jar. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “M. S. Juanico”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
