Gloria Kahe (b. 1951) is Navajo and married Samuel Kahe in 1970. She learned to make pottery from her mother-in-law Marcella Kahe. She is the mother of Valerie Kahe and her sister-in-law is Karen Kahe Charley. This bowl is a fascinating piece that is made from native clay, coil-built, fully polished, and painted. It has a spiraling design that has all of the Hopi clans. At the base is the Butterfly Clan and at the rim is the Bear Clan. The spiral upward, telling the story of the clans emergence into this world. it is painted with bee-weed and clay slips. It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “G. Kahe”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
