This is a striking wide jar by Alton Komalestewa. It is a fully polished and fired a dark brown coloration. The jar has a classic Hopi-Sikyakti shape with wide, round shoulder The entire surface is fully polished. The neck is matte in contrast to the polished surface. The piece is simple and elegant in both form and design. The jar is signed on the bottom by Alton and he also uses a katsina face as part of the hallmark of his name. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Alton Komalestewa (Hopi-Tewa), Melon Jar[/caption]
Alton Komalestewa is a great grandson of Nampeyo of Hano through her son William Komalestewa (1893-1922). Alton learned to make pottery from Santa Clara potter Helen Shupla. She taught him how to make her classic style of melon bowls with the undulating ribs.
