Komalestewa, Cynthia Sequi – Tall Jar with Hummingbirds and Corn (1990’s)
$ 600.00
Cynthia Sequi Komalestewa (1954-2002) was a daughter of Hugh Sequi (who was the brother of Helen Naha) and a sister of Miltona Naha. Her aunt-in-law was Helen Naha. Cynthia made traditional Hopi-Tewa pottery with her own spin on the Naha family style. She learned a lot of her pottery techniques from Sylvia Naha. Each piece was coil-built, stone-polished, and painted with bee-weed and natural clay slips. This is the largest jar i have seen by her. It has hummingbirds, or more likely hummingbird moths, on each side. There are a total of four hummingbirds, each pair separated by a corn plant. There are additional white and red clay slips used to accentuate the design. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “C. R. Sequi”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
