Lucas, Steve – 10″ Wide “Butterflies” Large Jar (2008), Ribbon
$ 3,800.00
This is a creative large jar by Steve Lucas. He is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black), and traditionally fired. This jar has a wide shoulder and sloping top. The top of the jar has four butterflies, which are separated by four butterfly wing designs. Below the shoulder are large diamond shapes. The imagery combines white and deep clay colors with the black bee-weed. The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan). The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It has a ribbon from the 2008 Gallup Ceremonials.
