Lucas, Steve – 10″ Wide “Prayer for Rain” Wide Shoulder Jar
$ 3,300.00
This is a complex large jar by Steve Lucas. He is one of the leading Hopi-Tewa potters working today. Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, painted with native clay slips and bee-weed (black), and traditionally fired. This jar has a wide shoulder and sloping top. The jar is entitled, “Prayer for Rain”. The top has rain and cloud designs painted in black and polished red and brown. The bottom is textured as Steve said he wanted to create the idea of how the ground feels when the rain first starts to fall. The jar was traditionally fired to create blushes on the surface. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “S. Lucas” and a mudhead (koyemsi) and an ear of corn (corn clan).
