Lugo, Sergio – “Caught in the Forest” Polychrome Carved Jar
$ 5,400.00
Sergio Lugo is the middle son of noted potter Nancy Youngblood and a brother to Joseph Lugo and Christopher Youngblood. He learned to make pottery from his mother. Each piece is coil-built, carved or painted, stone polished, and traditionally fired. This piece combines nearly every technique, including carving, etching, painting, and polishing. The jar has an elongated neck and eight sharp-edged melon ribs. The ribs are fully polished a deep red coloration. The ribs extend upward and are deeply carved into the clay. The neck of the jar is painted with clay slips to create the aspen trees. However, look closer, and the knots of the aspen trees are actually eyes! The piece was traditionally fired with a rich coloration. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sergio Lugo”.
