Martinez, Maria- Polychrome Water Jar (1910-15), Published
$ 18,000.00
In 1904, when Maria Montoya married Julian Martinez (1885–1943), she was already making pottery. Her pieces before this time had been painted by Cresencio Martinez, Alfredo Montoya, Anna Martinez, and other relatives. Once Maria was married, it was Julian who began to paint their polychrome pottery. Julian was quickly recognized for the precision and creativity of his designs. This large water jar has a creative flower or star design. There is a similar piece that was photographed with a young Maria for a Fred Harvey Company postcard. The designs are more bold compared to the later thin, fine-line patterns used by Julian in the 1920’s. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It was published in the book, “Maria and Modernism” and featured in the exhibition at the Heard Museum.
