Martinez, Maximilliana “Anna” – Checkerboard Jar with Red Rim (1910-15), Published
$ 6,500.00
Maximilliana “Anna” Montoya Martinez (1885–1955) was a sister of Maria Martinez. She was married to Cresencio Martinez (a brother of Tonita Roybal). Anna was considered among the best painters of designs on pottery. She not only painted her own pottery but was noted for painting pottery for Marianita Roybal as well as for her own sister, Maria Martinez. The jar has her stylistic checkerboard pattern and a red polished rim, for which she was well known. The surface of the jar reflects the traditional firing. It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair. It was published in the book, “Maria and Modernism,” and featured in the exhibition at the Heard Museum.
