Martinez, Ron Looking Elk – Corn and Clouds Brown Fired Seedpot (2004)

Ron “Looking Elk” Martinez has both Taos and Isleta ancestry.  He began making pottery in the 1990s.  He studied pottery at IAIA.  He received an SAR Internship in 1997 and the Challenge Award at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2000.  Each piece is coil-built, stone polished, and traditionally fired, then etched with designs.  This seedpot was fired brown and then etched with intricate designs.  There are clouds, corn, and plant designs.  Note the tiny checkerboard field patterns!  It is a complex etched design.  It is signed, “Ron Looking Elk”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
