Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs. This jar is from the 1980s and it combines both carved and etched designs. The jar is coil-built, then carved, etched with designs, and then traditionally fired. The top part of the jar has a carved rim which is incredibly difficult to create. The carved area also creates a carved avanyu that encircles the jar. As the piece is turned, there are etched medallions. Each medallion has a combination of either butterflies or butterflies and flowers. They are delicately etched into the clay. The area near the base is slipped with mica for a striking contrast to the red polished area. This style of carved jar was always among the most complex that Grace made and combined both technical aspects of her work in one piece! The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”. It is an elegant and stunning piece of history.

Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs. This is a set of three miniature long-neck jars. Each one is fully polished and etched with that encircles the shoulder. The tallest of the three has a feather pattern on the neck and avanyu around the shoulder. The middle jar has three realistic rabbits along with tiny flowers. The smallest of the three has swirling clouds. The remainder of each piece is fully polished. They are each highly detailed and it’s amazing she could achieve so much detail on such a small surface! They are each traditionally fired and they are from 1989. They are all in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”. They are intricate, elegant, and stunning pieces of history.
