Medicine Flower, Grace – Large Black Carved Bowl with Avanyu and Flute Player (1993)

8"w x 5.5"h

$ 8,000.00

Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This is one of her few larger black carved and etched pieces.  The bowl is from 1993 and is deeply carved with an avanyu encircling the bowl. The rim of the bowl is carved away to match the shape of her designs.  Grace always said this one was one of the most difficult moments in the process, as the carved rim could easily crack in carving, polishing, or firing!  The bowl has numerous carved areas and one large sgraffito flute player medallion.  The design was etched into the clay before the firing. The bottom of the bowl has a Mimbres ram, a Mimbres Ram Dancer, and a Mimbres Flute Player.  The bowl is very highly and fired to a glassy black.  It is spectacular in person!  Grace always had an eye on the complete composition of a piece and made sure it was aesthetically pleasing and technically precise.  The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
