Medicine Flower, Grace – Large Seedpot with Avanyu and Corn (1973)

3.75"w x 3.75"h

$ 1,200.00

Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This is an early seedpot from 1973.  It is fully polished and etched with design.  One side has a ears of corn with a feather pattern, a Yei, and an avanyu.  The opposite side has an avanyu and ears of corn in the center.  Separating the medallions are sets of ears of corn.  Grace always had an eye on the complete composition of a piece and made sure it was not just aesthetically pleasing but also technically precise.  Interestingly, Grace did all of her etching/sgraffito in the clay before the pieces were fired, which added to their overall difficulty.  The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is a classic piece of her pottery history!
