Grace Medicine Flower began her career making miniature pottery with incised designs.  This seed jar is from the 1980s.  It has a tall shape with a tiny neck.  It is fully polished and then etched with design.  There is a medallion with a single larger flute player.  Note the linear incised background surrounding the figure. As the piece is turned, there are two more flute players connected by a spiraling feather pattern.  The background area is etched with rounded circles.  The piece is complex and creative in design and unique with the style of design in the matte areas. Interestingly, Grace did all of her etching/sgraffito in the clay before the pieces were fired, which added to their overall difficulty.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Grace Medicine Flower”.   It is intricate, elegant and a stunning piece of history.
