John Montoya was one of the few potters from Sandia Pueblo. It is one of the smaller pueblos in New Mexico.  This is a spectacular tall jar that is fully painted.  One side has an owl as the design.  The rim on that side is carved in a terrace or “kiva step” manner.  The opposite side has a large katsina figure.  The entire piece is exceptional in design and flow of imagery.  The jar is painted with clay slips.  It is signed on the bottom, “John Montoya”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.   provenance!

Montoya, John (1960-2005)

John Montoya was one of the few potters from Sandia Pueblo. He was self-taught. After serving in the Navy, he set out to learn traditional pottery skills. He became well-known for his traditional polychrome pieces, highly decorated with Mimbres and Anasazi designs. Unfortunately, he has passed away, at the height of his career.
