Namingha, Les – 9″ Wide “Shards and Birds” Jar (1990s)

9"w x 7"h

$ 4,400.00

This is a large, round jar by Les Namingha.  Les is both Zuni and Hopi-Tewa, and this jar is made from the late 1990s.  It is made from Hopi clay and painted with bee-weed and clay slip.  The top of the jar has large pottery shard sections that are polished red.  Below them are larger shards that have hatachure lines, delicately painted on the surface.  Around the shoulder are bird wings and mountain designs.  The neck of the jar has his famous pointilism dots. The complex painting with traditional materials is from Les’s early career, before he began using acrylic.  This jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. As usual, Les is quite extraordinary in his creativity, painting, and forms.  Les is a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano and learned to make pottery from his aunt Dextra Quotskuyva.  It is signed on the bottom, “Les Namingha”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
