Namingha, Les – “Awatovi III” Multi-Media Small Jar (2011)

This is a creative and unusual jar by Les Namingha from 2011. The piece is entitled “Awatovi III”. The jar is coil-built, painted, and layered with acrylics gels to create the texture. The colors and crackling on the surface are exceptional and there is an amazing texture to the surface. It’s definitely a difficult one to capture in photos but the depth and coloration are striking. There is a band around the center with hei-shi beads. Les said of this series:
“My thoughts, as I created this piece, were focused on the tragic actions that happened at a place called Awatovi, which was once a thriving Hopi village. A massacre occurred at the village in the latter part of the 1700s. The aggressors were other Hopi who had abhorrent feelings towards the Awatovi villagers who had converted to Christianity. The men of Awatovi were killed in the kivas, while any surviving women and children were dispersed to the other Hopi villages. With this in mind, I wanted to create a work that would allude to the destruction. The surface of the jar was created with various acrylic gel mediums to create a crackled surface. Embedded into the paint is a mixture of sand, rock, and shell burned kivas of the village. I wanted to create a piece that is a symbolic representation of the obscuring of Awatovi’s history by the element of time.”
The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Les Namingha”.
