This is a creative Zuni fetish clay bear by Les Namingha. While Les is famous for his Hopi-Tewa and Zuni pottery, he has also made both clay and stone fetishes in the past. On these pieces, Jocelyn said that he made for a showing of Zuni fetishes, and they were inspired by the pieces by Leekya Deeyuse. The bear is clay and has a textured black/brown surface. There is a green tab arrowhead on the back. In Zuni culture, the bear is a symbol of strength, power, healing, and self-knowledge. He is the great protector. This bear is carved with just a slight turn to its head! It is signed on the bottom, “L. N.”.

On these new pieces, Les said, “I was able to set up my carving station and decided to try my hand at stone carving! I’m definitely enjoying the change of medium”. This bear fetish is carved from limestone. There is a green turquoise arrowhead on the back along with turquoise, coral and shell. The bear is very highly polished and has a great texture! In Zuni culture, the bear is a symbol of strength, power, healing, and self-knowledge. He is the great protector. This bear is carved with just a slight turn to its head!
