Namingha, Les – “Corn Feeds the Universe” Wide Shoulder Jar

11"w x 6"h

$ 11,000.00

Les Namingha is one of those potters who continues to defy expectations in his innovative clay art.  This jar is entitled,”Corn Feeds the Universe”.  The shape of the jar, with a wide shoulder and short neck, is inspired by historic Sikyatki forms.  The designs on the jar are complex and tell an exceptional story.  The areas with the small dots are the bands of “Corn”.  They expand out from the opening of the jar.  They create areas of separation, that each have their own distinctive designs.  One section has panels with the rising sun.  Two of them have small areas of Hopi katsina faces (the black triangles of the Crow Mother, or the half circle eyes of the Grandmother Katsina).  The stars, sun, katsinas, all represent the universe and the concept that corn is part of what creates life.  The bottom of the bowl has a mixture with mica for a slight texture. The bold, white design is a stylized “migration” line, telling of the journey from our world to the cosmos above.  It is a bold and creative jar!  The jar is signed, “Les Namingha”.  Once again Les creates such thoughtful work and challenges the viewer to find a deeper meaning in each piece!
