This is an innovative jar by Les Namingha from 1993. The jar is made with traditional Hopi clay and painted with bee-weed and polished red areas. The jar has a round shape with a raised neck. The jar is entitled, “Rainbow Spring”. majority of the jar is polished to a deep red coloration. The top of the shoulder has an area that is both painted and incised. There are painted stars and an incised setting, a crescent moon, and an incised prayer feather. The matte neck is meant to represent the Hopi Mesa and the black line is the rainbow. It is a detailed and creative jar! The piece was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Les Namingha”.

This is a traditional jar by Les Namingha from 1993. The jar is made with traditional Hopi clay and painted with bee-weed and red, brown, and mauve clay painted sections. The jar has a round shape with a small neck. There area above the shoulder has sections that look like the Hopi mesas. However, upon closer inspection, the are actually Longhair katsinas. They are painted with various colors of clay. Extending down on the sides is the rain or “hair” of the Longhair Katsinas. Les said the design for this jar was a reflection of how the landscape and climate of Hopi helped him envision some of the Katsinas. The piece was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed, “Les Namingha”.
