Namoki, Lawrence – “Awatovi” Tall Jar with Awatovi Kiva Mural Designs

5"w x 6.5"h

$ 850.00

Lawrence Namoki was known for the variety of styles of his pottery. While he began with deeply carved pottery, he ended his career by creating delicately painted vessels.  This jar is coil-built and painted with clay slips. Awatovi is a village near Hopi that made a white-slip pottery from 1100-1700.  It is a fascinating place as it was where Coronado made contact with the Hopi in 1540 but was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.  The kiva murals (see last two photos) are among the most famous remnants of the village.  This jar has classic Awatovi designs, including a bird, hummingbird, rainbow and hand, and rainclouds with tadpoles. They are painted with clay slips and bee-weed on a painted clay surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Lawrence Namoki”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
