1.75"w x 3.5"h

$ 110.00

Carla Claw Nampeyo is a daughter of noted potter Thomas Polacca and a niece of Fannie Nampeyo. She is also a great-granddaughter of Nampeyo of Hano. Her brother is Gary Polacca and she is married to Raul Claw (Navajo).  She is known for her incised pottery and the use of slips that give the appearance of wood to the surface of her pottery. This seedpot has a Left hand Katsina as the design.  The figure is carved into the clay holding a bow and arrow.  It is said of the Left Hand Katsina:

The Left Handed Katsina (Siyangephoya) is said by some to be derived from the Hualapai Indians. He carries his gear opposite of regular Katsinam (he must use his right hand, rather than his left, to draw an arrow from the quiver). This Katsina moves with strange bobbings and little mincing steps. Despite his odd behavior, he is an excellent hunter and some consider him quite powerful. In full-figure carvings he is usually shown holding an eagle or with a deer draped over his shoulder, demonstrating his hunting prowess.

The seedpot is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom, “Carla Nampeyo”.
