Nampeyo, Fannie – 8″ Wide Jar with Katsina and Bird Designs (1970s)
$ 2,000.00
Fannie Nampeyo was the youngest daughter of noted potter Nampeyo of Hano and also the mother of noted potters Iris Nampeyo, Leah Nampeyo, and Thomas Polacca. She was certainly among the most skilled of her generation in painting and designing pottery. This jar has sloping sides and a short neck. The piece was coil-built and painted with bee-weed (black) and red clay for accents. The design is one that is a classic in the pottery of Nampeyo of Hano. There are alternating Katsina faces and birds. The piece is very finely painted with thin lines and delicate imagery across the surface. It was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is signed, “Fannie Nampeyo” with an ear of corn to represent Corn Clan. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
