Naranjo, Christina – Jar with Carved Feather Designs (1960s)

8"w x 6"h

$ 1,200.00

This jar is a classic piece by Christina Naranjo.   Christina was a sister of Margaret Tafoya and Camilio Tafoya, as well as the matriarch of the family of potters including Teresita Naranjo and Tammy Garcia. This jar has a sharp shoulder and sloping sides.  It is deeply carved with an old style of feather patterns (think the early plates of Maria Martinez).  There are eleven feathers carved into the bowl. It is a complex design as there has to be symmetry to the feathers and the carved space around them!  There is a lot of potential for error in the carving stage. The jar is stone polished and fired to a deep black coloration.  The design is exceptional.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Christina Naranjo”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There is still the original price of $175 on the bottom!
