Elizabeth Naranjo was known for her large, intricately carved vessels. This jar has a high shoulder and a slight neck. The top of the jar has carved feathers and is fully polished. Round the body of the piece are carved kiva steps and rain designs. The jar is highly polished and fired to a glassy black coloration. It is an elegant shape with exceptional polishing and carving. It is signed, “Elizabeth Naranjo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.

Elizabeth Naranjo was a daughter of Pablita Chavarria. She was also a sister of noted potters Clara Shije, Reycita Naranjo, Florence Browning, and Mary Singer. Elizabeth was known for her large vessels and deeply carved designs. She has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market and her work is in museums nationwide, such as the Heard Museum and the Denver Art Museum.
