Naranjo-Garcia, Sharon – 11″ Tall Jar with Avanyu, Feathers, and Bear Lid (2005) Ribbon

Sharon Naranjo Garcia (b. 1951) is a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo.  She learned to make pottery from her grandmother and is known for her traditional style of pottery. This jar has a wide shoulder and small neck.  The entire piece is fully carved with a flowing avanyu (water serpent) and feather designs. The avanyu is fully polished.  The jar has a lid with a deeply carved heartline bear that is fully polished.  Around the side of the lid is a carved avanyu in matte.  Note how she uses the negative space of the lower section to accentuate the flow of the avanyu around the jar.  It is fired a deep black.  The bowl is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Sharon Naranjo Garcia”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There is a second place ribbon from the 2005 Eight Northern Pueblos Show.
