Rose Naranjo was the matriarch of one of the amazing families at Santa Clara Pueblo. Descendants include Roxanne Swentzell, Jody Folwell, Susan Folwell, Johnathan Naranjo, Rose Simpson, Nora Naranjo-Morse, and many others! It is not often that we come across her pottery. This piece is made from micaceous clay. It is a large water jar with a rounded shoulder and elongated neck. The shoulder has a raised “hobnails” around the shoulder. This is a style often seen on micaceous pottery from Taos or Nambe. The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface. It is signed on the bottom, “Rose”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is a unique piece by this influential matriarch.
