WOW!  This is a spectacular rather massive water jar by Joy “Frog Woman” Navasie.  She was known for her white slipped pottery and classic use of design elements. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Paqua, who also used white clay and signed with a frog as a hallmark.  The white kaolin clay is a slip that is applied to the surface of the bowl and then black (bee-weed) and red clay slips are used for painting.  This jar is a classic shape with a round shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim.  The piece is thin walled and there is an interlocking cloud design around the neck of the piece.  Around the shoulder are four panels or sections of the design.  Two sections have swirling hummingbirds, the other two have swirling eagles.  Each section is tightly painted and fluid in design.  It is striking how she used the negative white space to accentuate her painted designs.  The deeper red (burgundy) colored clay is one she began using in the 1980s.  The jar was traditionally fired so there are light blushes on the surface, especially on the side of the piece.  They definitely add to the depth of the jar in terms of coloration.  The jar is signed on the bottom with her frog hallmark.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
