Once Known – 9″ Tall Black-on-Red Jar (ca. 1890s)

This is a classic black-on-red jar from the 1890s.  This style was as popular as the polychrome pottery at the time.  The jar is a classic shape with a round body and a short neck.  There are plant designs on the neck. While the jar is fully painted with dynamic imagery,  there is not enough definitive imagery to give the jar an attribution, so we say it is by a potter and painter once known.  The surface of the jar is a reflection of the traditional firing process.  It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair.
