This is a colorful water jar by Franklin Peters. He is known for his thin-walled pottery and use of traditional Acoma imagery on his pottery. The jar is coil-built with native clay and painted with bee-weed (black). The jar has interlocking birds in red and orange clay and painted clouds. There are terraced clouds and fine-line designs near the base. The rim of the jar has a painted “spirit line”, which is often seen on Acoma pottery. The jar is signed on the bottom, “Franklin Peters”.

Franklin Peters learned to make pottery from his mother Ella Vallo Peters and her sister Phyllis Juanico. His work remains influenced by these traditional potters. He also received one of the prestigious fellowships at the School of American Research in 2011. There he was able to study and examine historic Acoma pottery and the experience has helped to influence the direction of his artwork. Franklin uses native clay and traditional paints for his pottery.
