This is a creative figurative plate by Marilyn Henderson Ray.  She is known for her intricate storytellers, and figurative scenes. This piece is from 2010. The plate has a a lizard in relief on one side.  In the center is a Koshari clown holding a watermelon and a canteen.  The figure is in relief in the center of the plate.  Surrounding the figure are traditional geometric and rain designs.   The entire piece is painted with various clay slips.  The plate is signed on the bottom, “M. Ray”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.

Marilyn Henderson Ray

Marilyn Henderson Ray (b.1954) of Acoma Pueblo has been making pottery since 1966. Her creations, most often storytellers, children at play, nativities, animals, and friendship bowls, are some of the most vibrant, fun and animated figurative pottery. Marilyn was taught the craft of making pottery by her grandmother Dolores Sanchez, and Marilyn is the fifth generation in her family to continue the tradition of pottery making.
