Redbird, Ida – Polychrome Bowl with Wave and Mountain Designs (1950’s)

8"w x 4"h

$ 975.00

Ida Redbird is one of the best-known potters involved in the revival of Maricopa pottery from 1937-40. She was featured in Arizona Highways in 1948. Her pottery is made using a paddle-and-anvil technique, and they are fired twice. The black designs are derived from a mixture of mesquite sap and cactus spines.  This bowl is a classic shape with a polished exterior. However, it is unusual as it combines the white and red clay slips.  The top half of the outside of the bowl is white.  The bottom half and interior are red.  The bowl has a water and mountain pattern. It is a visually striking combination of colors with tightly painted imagery on the surface.  The jar is in good condition with age-appropriate wear but with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Ida Redbird” on the bottom.
