Roybal, Marianita – Large Water Jar with Plant Designs (ca 1905)
$ 8,800.00
Marianita Roybal (1843–?) was famous for her storage jars and may be one of the first Pueblo potters to sign a piece of her work by making her name part of the design. She was the mother of Susana Aguilar, who became famous for her pottery in the 1920s. Typical of the era, Marianita would make the piece and it would be painted by a relative or neighbor. This jar is slipped with white Cochiti clay. It was painted by Anna Martinez (a sister of Maria Martinez). The surface of the jar reflects the traditional firing. It is in very good condition with no cracks, restoration, or repair.
