Roybal, Tonita – Gunmetal Fired Jar with Avanyu (1920’s)
$ 2,800.00
Tonita Roybal remains one of the great innovative names in San Ildefonso pottery. This is a stunning jar with a classic round shoulder shape. The jar has an avanyu painted as the design encircling the piece. Tonita rarely painted the water serpent as a design. I looked back and this only the fourth piece of hers with an avanyu we have had in the gallery! What makes this piece so special is the firing. It was high fired to create a silvery, gunmetal coloration. In person, it is striking with an overall tonality. The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Tonita”. It is in very good condition with no structural cracks, restoration, or repair.. It is a beautiful piece of her creativity in clay.
